Shanghai Notary Office is affiliated with the judicial administration department of the Republic of China.
At present, there are 22 notary offices in Shanghai, including 1 municipal notary office, 1 county notary office and 20 district notary offices (Huangpu and Jinshan districts have 2 each due to the merger of administrative districts).
For expats, to notarize documents or certificates, the applicant may notarize at the notary office nearby his residence address in Shanghai.

Procedures for obtaining Shanghai notarial certificate
1.The applicant submits the materials to Shanghai Public Notary Office (Gong Zheng Chu “公证处”).

Notarial certificate of birth in Shanghai
A birth certificate is a document issued by a local government to certify the birth of a baby. The People’s Republic of China began to use the Medical Certificate of Birth on January 1, 1996.
The Medical Certificate of birth must be issued by a health care institution that has approved the provision of technical services for midwifery and has obtained a license for technical services for Maternal and Child Health Care according to law.
There are three kinds of notarization of birth: notarization of birth medical certificate, notarization of birth certificate and notarization of kinship certificate. The type of certificate you need depends on the specific requirements of the relevant department.
1.Notarization of birth medical certificate
The notarization of the medical certificate of birth means that the notarial office certifies the authenticity of the medical certificate of birth issued by the relevant hospital held by the party concerned according to its application.
* Attention, please! The medical certificate of birth is only valid for children born after 1996, as there was no medical certificate of birth before then.

2.Notarization of birth certificate
Different from the Notarization of birth medical certificate, Notarization of birth certificate is the activity of the state notary organ to prove the fact of his birth in the Chinese territory according to the application of the party, which belongs to the fact notarization.

3. Notarized proof of kinship
Notarized proof of kinship is the activity of the notary office to prove the authenticity and legitimacy of the mutual relationship between the applicant and others due to blood, marriage, and adoption according to the application of the parties.

1.Scan copy of applicant’s photo identification document.
If the applicant is a Chinese citizen, you will need to provide a Chinese ID card （身份证）and household registration book（户口本）.
If the applicant is a foreign citizen, a valid passport will be required.
2.Scan copy of parents’ marriage certificate.
3.Scan copy of birth certificate to be notarized.

If the applicant is a foreign citizen, the parents need to provide both valid passports and an old passport that has been used in China.

Notarization of marriage certificate in Shanghai
There are two types of notarized marriage certificates: marriage notarization and marriage certificate notarization. Both are acceptable.
1.Marriage Notarization
Marriage Notarization means that the notary office proves the fact that the applicant has been married.
- Marriage Certificate Notarization
Marriage Certificate Notarization is to prove that the copy of the marriage certificate is consistent with the original, and prove that the seal on the marriage certificate is true. It proves the authenticity of personal documents.
